HMD and Lava bring back phones with broadcast TV support

Watch TV everywhere

HMD and Lava are set to unveil smartphones capable of receiving broadcast TV without requiring internet or Wi-Fi. These devices will be presented at the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025, scheduled for May at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai, India.

The technology, known as Direct-to-Mobile (D2M), enables the phone to receive signals and stream multimedia content without the need for a cellular or wireless connection. The Lava phone will be equipped with an ultra-high-frequency (UHF) antenna to receive terrestrial TV broadcasts.

Both the Lava and HMD devices are feature phones that will include a dedicated SL3000 chip from Saankhya Labs. Lava has confirmed that its phone was developed in partnership with Tejas Networks and will be powered by a MediaTek MT6261 chip. Additionally, it will feature a 2,200 mAh battery and a 2.8-inch screen, raising the question of who would want to watch TV on such a small display.
